Japan today contributed =A5600 million (yen)
to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in
the Near East (UNRWA) to support food assistance programmes benefiting
Palestinians in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
The funds will be used to purchase wheat
for needy families registered with UNRWA as special hardship cases, and
to support the Agency's nutritional programme for nursing mothers and pregnant
women.
The donation - equivalent to around $4.9 million - was formalized in an agreement signed today in Amman by UNRWA Deputy Commissioner General Karen Koning AbuZayd and Japan's Ambassador to Jordan, Shintaro Sasaki.
UNRWA provides basic education, health, relief and social services for nearly 3.9 million Palestine refugees, including 1.7 million in Jordan.
